The following list of courses gives some indication of the breadth of training opportunities available to staff in North Lanarkshire establishments. Most courses can be run either in schools or at the ICT & Technical Services Centre. The full list of courses and dates is only available by accessing North Lanarkshire CPD Service.

RTC
As part of the Computer Centre's Apple Regional Training Centre status we are able to offer a number of free twilight CPD opportunities to staff using Apple products.
These courses will be delivered at no cost to schools as Apple will pay for the costs of the training.
All of the courses will have a strong focus on learning & teaching.

Course Title Brief Description Outline and Objectives
FirstClass and the Education Intranet This course will consider the nature of the North Lanarkshire Education Intranet, electronic mail and discussion groups. The course will focus on the following: • electronic mail using FirstClass • conferences available via FirstClass • the use of calendars, mailing lists and address books.
An introduction to Apple Remote Desktop  in Primary School Networks The course will focus on how Apple Remote Desktop reduces the workload of maintaining Apple computer systems on a school network. The course will focus on the following: • copying new software/files to multiple computers simultaneously • observing and controlling networked computers • auditing hardware and software on networked computers • remote configuration and management of networked systems.

Using FileMaker Pro 7 The course will introduce database concepts by considering the basic features and facilities of FileMaker Pro 7 for Macintosh and Windows PC systems. The course will focus on the following: • field definitions and table relationships • searching and sorting • layouts and reporting, data  formatting
File Sharing for Mac and PC users on an Apple Server The course will focus on creating share points on an Apple Server which will provide secure access to the files and data of an individual user or groups of users. The course will focus on the following: • creating, storing and organising files on the school file server • sharing files with appropriate security and protection • best practice for business continuity • backup procedures and recovery after disaster strikes
European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL) The ECDL course will be accessed 'on-line' using a web browser  from school and/or home.  Additionally participants can choose to attend any or all bi-weekly tutorial sessions at the Computer Centre. The course will focus on the seven ECDL modules: • Concepts of Information Technology   • Word Processing • Using the Computer and Managing Files   • Spreadsheets • Databases   • Presentation  • Information and Communication
Creating and Presenting Using Microsoft Powerpoint The course will  introduce a progression of techniques which will provide the beginner with the basic skills required to create presentations using Microsoft PowerPoint. The course will focus on the following • creating slides • adding text and graphics • transitions • using templates
Top 10 Activities with a SmartBoard The course is a practical introduction to using digital projectors and whiteboards in the classroom. The course will focus on the following: • setting up the projector and board • using the pen tools • using software • creating, storing and editing lessons
Digital Cameras & Scanners The course is a practical introduction to using digital projectors and whiteboards in the classroom. The course will focus on the following: • setting up the projector and board • using the pen tools • using software • creating, storing and editing lessons
An introduction to Apple's OSX Environment The course will walk through the main features of Apple's latest operating system and will map users' knowledge of the old Macintosh environment to the new. The course will focus on the following: • main features of the user interface • configuring preferences, printers and network connections • new features • hints and tips
Using Clicker 4 The course will explore the powerful features of Clicker 4 which allow teachers to create their own learning resources to support a wide range of curricular contexts The course will focus on the following: • Clicker features and templates • creating new templates with speech, text and graphics • accessing new Clicker support materials from the Web
An Introduction to the ICT Programme of Study The course will explore the various components of the NLC Programme of Study. The course will focus on the following • installation of software and management of files • structure of programme and links to 5-14 ICT • progression of skills • integration of programme into classroom practice
Creating Web Pages and Administering a School Web Site The course is a practical introduction to creating web pages and adding them to a web site. The course will focus on the following: • site design strategies, security, legal and ethical issues • web page design • web page creation using an authoring package • uploading finished pages to a server, management of the web site
Using  Scanners The course will allow participants to become familiar with various aspects of scanner use. The course will focus on the following: • hardware installation • software installation • basic operation of a scanner and camera • formatting of output.
Using iMovie The course will introduce iMovie software and its uses in the 5-14 curriculum The course will focus on the following • transferring a movie from camera to computer • editing existing movies • using iMovie in a 5-14 curriculum context • introduction to Apple education 5-14 Levels A-C resource disk
Using Digital Cameras The course will allow participants to become familiar with using still digital cameras and techniques to process images on the computer. The course will focus on the following: • software installation • basic operation of digital cameras • manipulating and processing images on the computer • incorporating images in other documents
Using SuperSpell to support Language development The course will give participants the opportunity to explore this software which reinforces spelling patterns and rules The course will focus on the following • creating and editing word lists • printing activity sheets • managing pupil records
Using Inspiration and Kidspiration to Improve Learning and Thinking Skills These titles are available in all schools. The software can help pupils to develop ideas and organise logical thinking. The course will focus on the following: • brainstorming and planning • creating diagrams and outlines • organising and categorising information visually • options for printing layouts
Interactive Resources - Maths Packs This software is available in all schools. The course will explore various programs within the Interactive Resources Maths Packs software. The course will focus on the following • installation • the main features of each of the software titles • integration with the 5-14 curriculum • using the Maths Packs with an Interactive Whiteboard
Kudlian Suite in context The course will explore the various programs within the Kudlian Suite of software which support 5-14 Data Handling, Controlling & Modelling, Language and Art. The course will focus on the following • installation (Mac or PC) • the main features of each of the software titles • integration with 5-14 curriculum and NLC Programme of Study
2Simple Infant Video Toolkit The course will explore the various programs within the 2Simple Toolkit which support  Data Handling, Controlling & Modelling, Language and Art. The course will focus on the following • installation (Mac or PC) • the main features of each of the software titles • integration with 5-14 curriculum and NLC Programme of Study • use of the video help files
5-14 Personal Learning Plans using Picasso The software enables pupils to create personal learning plans. The course will focus on the following • setting improvement targets • producing personal learning plans • monitoring and recording progress • easing the transition from Primary to Secondary School
Word Processing Using  Microsoft Word The course will allow participants to develop their word processing skills on a Macintosh computer, allowing more complex documents to be created. The course will focus on the following: • formatting techniques • using graphics and clip-art • page breaks, footers and headers • tabs and tables.
Relational Databases (Theory) The course will consider aspects of relational databases in terms of  H. Still courses in Computing, Information Systems and Administration. A practical course using Filemaker Pro also available. The course will focus on the following: • database management system concepts • database structure • exemplar database problems
Creating & Editing  Graphics and Digital Photographs Using a variety of software, the course will build upon the existing graphic skills of participants to allow the production of more complex documents. The course will focus on the following: • drawing shapes, colour and pattern fills, lines and line styles • Scaling and cropping photographs • autogrid, alignment of objects,grouping of graphic objects, graphic layers • text in graphics, using clipart and images from other sources
Searching and Researching using the World Wide Web This course will provide a practical introduction to the World Wide Web and its use as a curriculum resource. The course will focus on the following: • browser software and basic access skills • bookmarks/favourites and searching • downloading text and graphics • acceptable use  issues
Videoconferencing Using Marratech The course is a practical introduction to IP videoconferencing. The course will focus on the following • Installation and configuration of hardware and software • Tools available within the Marratech software • Videoconferencing etiquette.
Teacher's Guide to Troubleshooting The course will provide hints, tips and procedures for dealing with the common problems that arise with school computers. The course will focus on the following: • correct computer setup • configuring software • successful network access • printers & other devices
Basic Computer Skills for PC Users The course will introduce beginners to the basic skills required to use computers. The course will focus on the following: • set up and use of computers • using software • saving, copying and finding files • using printers
Basic Computer Skills for Mac Users The course will introduce beginners to the basic skills required to use computers. The course will focus on the following: • set up and use of computers • using software • saving, copying and finding files • using printers
Spreadsheets - Using Microsoft Excel The course will introduce a progression of skills which will enable the production and use of spreadsheets. The course will focus on the following: • examining simple spreadsheets • creating new spreadsheet layouts • entering text, data and formulae into cells,  simple graphs • printing and saving
Using 'Keynote2' from Apple's iWork to create multimedia presentations The course will introduce a progression of techniques which will provide  beginners with the basic skills required to create presentations using Keynote2 The course will focus on the following • installing the software • creating slides • adding text and graphics • transitions • using templates
Creating documents using 'Pages' from Apple's iWork application The course will introduce a progression of techniques which will provide  beginners with the basic skills required to create a variety of documents such as newsletters, flyers, brochures and posters The course will focus on the following • importing AppleWorks and Word files • adding text and graphics • using templates • saving, exporting and printing finished documents
Introduction to Cloze Pro The course will introduce participants to further software titles created by the publishers of Clicker. The course will focus on the following • using Cloze Pro's word recognition and prediction skills • creating new activities for  Cloze Pro • downloading activities from the internet
Using Macromedia Flash The course will introduce the basic techniques involved in creating presentations using Macromedia Flash. The course will focus on the following • creating graphics • creating animations • designing presentations
Self Evaluation of Standards & Quality in Computing Departments The course will consider approaches to departmental self evaluation  in the context of national guidelines in ICT and computing, and standards and quality reporting The course will focus on the following: • recent reports by HMI on ICT and Computing departments • national guidelines on Standards and Quality • auditing  and self-evaluation techniques • implications for development planning
Advanced use of FirstClass       This course will look at the new features in FirstClass version 8 and how they can best be used. The course will focus on the following: • using Message Rules in FirstClass version 8 • the use of calendars, mailing lists and address books. • sharing FirstClass documents • creating and sharing conferences
